From the moment we come into the world we are exposed to and connected to it. We are as fragile as a butterfly.
There is a shared human cultural understanding of butterflies as representing spiritual rebirth, transformation, hope and life. In European visual culture it represented the soul for centuries. That is why this wonderful insect has given names to several phenomena which relate to human life and human interconnectivity: the Butterfly Effect, the Butterfly Cycle, the Butterfly Touch…
We cannot escape each other. Even when we are not in physical contact we remain in touch one way or another. Our growth in the world is dependent on and influences, more or less, all the others. Our touch is powerful and healing, strong and gentle like the touch of a butterfly.
My human butterfly puts me in touch with a long lasting tradition of textile craft in my culture. Like a caterpillar, the large piece of doily – once a tablecloth, metamorphosed through my hands, marking not only continuity but also perpetual change.
